Yeah, there is something about alnico that really jibes with me, and it's the first thing I look at with speakers, but as usual, you have to try out several before you really decide on what's right since different speakers react differently to different amps and cabs.

I was all set to get another P12N or even a Celestion Gold for my Aracom PLX18 BB (18 Watt Plexi), but when I put my P12N into the combo, it stunk up the house! Yikes! So I dropped a Fane Medusa 150 (with a Ferrite magnet) into it, and that amp absolutely sings now! Because of its high power rating, I don't get much speaker cone breakup, but that's fine with me. The amp just sounds absolutely killer!

Goofydawg. Nice review. I am a tone nut, and have
GAS (not just guitar acquistion syndrom) but (gear acquisition syndrome) Speakers are no different. I went through
about 7 new/used speakers for a DRRI I have. The ceramics break through the mix, but, something about alnicos smooths it out, especially in a DRRI. I like the P12N as you said. I am done swapping in different 12 now. I was going to try for the $300+ celestion gold or scuminco, but, I am going to stop here..finally.. (I hope)

[...] After I wrote my review of the Jensen P12N, I asked myself why I had never really did any speaker reviews, or why you don’t actually find that many speaker reviews out there relative to other sorts of gear. I alluded to that in my review - I’d suspect that the reason you don’t see too many reviews on speakers is because a speaker is considered a “part.” Let’s be honest, a speaker is just a noise-making device without a cabinet to provide some resonance. And that’s really the root of the problem in reviewing speakers. [...]

It all depends on how happy you are with the Cube 30's sound. That's a pretty good sounding amp, and frankly, I wouldn't touch it. I love my Cube 60, and use it regularly for both gigging and practice. The speakers in the Cubes were all specially designed for them. I wouldn't even begin to know how to take that amp apart.

I'd say just stick with the stock speaker. Besides, a P12N won't fit in your cabinet. It's a 10" speaker in the Cube 30.

All that said, if you were willing to spend $250 for a new speaker, you might as well spend a little bit more and get yourself an entry-level tube amp. I've been eying a Peavey Windsor Studio for quite some time. It has a great sound, can take a bunch of different power tubes (I think it comes stock with an EL34), has a 12" speaker, a recording line out with a microphone simulator circuit no less, and costs less than $400.00! The amp was made to be tweaked, whereas something like a Cube is a self-contained package that you probably shouldn't mess with. Honestly, I don't think you'd be disappointed with the Windsor Studio.

Hey Goofy Dawg,

This isn't directly related to your review of the Jensen speaker but I was wanting your opinion on a speaker related question and this seemed like a good spot to post it.

I have a Roland Cube 30x and I know you quite like your Cube 60. I'm basically a bedroom player and the Cube 30x satisfies my playing needs right now and I love it but I'm always looking for relatively inexpensive ways to improve sounds and tones. I was just curious if you thought it would be a wise investment to change the speaker in the Cube 30x for something better, even the Jensen P12N or equivalent. Again, down the road I hope to get a tube amp but the Cube 30 will be my primary amp for quite a while so I look at it as a long term investment. I'm just wondering if you think I'll realize a noticable improvement in the sound.

Just wondering your thoughts or the thoughts of anyone else out there.

Thanks,
G
