My pedal sucks. Or have I got the wrong make of batteries in it. Or am I using the wrong colour cables. No, its my guitar playing that really sucks.
Yeah… The sales people perpetuate that stuff as well. This one time I stopped at my favorite guitar shop to pick up a new chorus (Homebrew THC) and needed a pedal cable. The only ones they had at the time were these DiMarzio cables that were something like $20 for a 6″ cable. I turned to the sales guy – mind you, a guy I’ve bought plenty of gear from – and said, “$20 for this?!!!” He replied, “Dude, they sound soooooo good.” My reply was, “Dude, you don’t actually believe that bullsh#t do you?” He just smiled and shrugged, which told me he didn’t, then pulled a regular ol’ Hossa cable off one his demos and gave it to me.
Good stuff, Dawg. It’s easy to get lost in the weeds of pedal minutiae. I’ve given up trying to understand the technicalities. A pedal either sounds good and works well with my other pedals, or it doesn’t. I don’t care what kind of chips and diodes it has, or whether its buffered or true by-pass. Too many conflicting opinions for me to sort out. All I know is that for OD pedals (my favorites!), I don’t like TS clones with pronounced mids and bass suck.
Here’s something for you to try, Dawg. You’re going to laugh, but I’m serious. If you have a Boss SD-1 laying around or can get one for cheap (hell, they’re only about $40 new), clip out the C6 diode. Restores bass response and makes the pedal more balanced. The best way I can describe it is smooth and juicy. It’s been my favorite OD for the last four weeks, displacing my beloved OCD. You’ll like it. If you don’t, I’ll buy it from you. Promise. I want a second one anyway.
