I read a very sad article on SF Gate today that reported that Ronnie’s actual cause of death wasn’t due to complications from cancer, but rather, from suicide. Apparently Ronnie suffered from life-long depression, and it finally just got the better of him.
I’ve had my own battles with depression throughout my life, but nothing so bad that I couldn’t bring myself back from the edge. But that type of deep depression Ronnie suffered from is something I couldn’t even fathom.
But cheers to you anyway, Ronnie! You touched a lot of people in your lifetime, and even though you couldn’t fully appreciate it due to your depression, you will always be remembered with kindness.
If one thing good can come of Ronnie’s death it’s opening up a discussion about depression and suicide. It’s a hidden epidemic but it doesn’t have to be. There’s so much help and support for people who are willing to open up.
I appreciate you opening up about your history with depression, if it inspires even one peson seek help you’ve done a world of good.
And that’s exactly what I did, Mike; got some help, and learned to cope with it – without the need for drugs, which was an important thing for me.
A totally excellent article. Cheers!!
May you rest in peace Ronnie. i saw him over a dozen times he had a unique style of playing and sound. Were losing the great ones that got us where we are today. Such a terrible thing to go through. I myself am having that same battle.
Depression is as real as life. You will sorely be missed but your music will carry on and never die.
