I’ve spent many years writing about Christian ideals. They’re the roots to my entire life. However, I’ve also had a strong sense of political justice and the increasing polarization of the parties and the divisive rhetoric that the politicians have been spewing has started to bother me; enough that I wanted to write a song about it.
To be clear and transparent, I’m a registered Republican – have been since I registered to vote 38 years ago – and have a conservative stance in that I believe in small government and personal freedoms. I believe that no one should get a free ride. But I’m much more centrist than many who have gone towards the far right. I believe in assisting those who are less fortunate by helping them help themselves (not to be confused with giving out handouts). I believe that in a true free market, EVERYONE should have the opportunity for financial success and not be enslaved by a select few whose greed prevents others to succeed. I believe that regulations should exist to prevent those few from abusing and gaming the system. I’m also willing to speak to the “other side” to come to a middle ground; not Boehner’s idea of a middle ground which really means that the Republicans win; but where there is discussion and agreement and a recognition that even though values differ, we’re all patriots.
You see, I love my country, and I’m sick of how both the left and right have divided our country. The hardliners on both sides speak in words that cause fear and anger. Haven’t they learned from the past? Hardline left = communism; hardline right = fascism. What’s next? Villify and imprison those that don’t agree? We’ve seen that already, and look at what it got us: Stalin, Mao, and Hitler. We need to come together as a country – and fast!
Here’s the song:
Couldn’t agree more!
Thanks, Dino!
Nice performance and song. The problem with our established political parties is that the wishes of the majority of the people don’t matter to them. Special interest are where it’s at. Pander to whoever will contribute the most money and say whatever is needed to get elected. I couold go on but what’s the point. Personally I do not want Obama re-elected but I am not to thrilled with the current Republican front runner either. Where can we find a canidate who will follow the ideals will of the people and our established constitution?
Couldn’t agree more. That’s the point of the song… it’s a sea of rhetoric that’s basically meaningless to the people because our politicians serve their special interest masters!
You and I see eye to eye on this Dawg. God help us! Terrific song, thanks.
Good song. Kinda reminiscent of Dave Mason, and some of the folk rock of the late 60’s
I made some changes to the song… Kind of strange for me to write something that wasn’t guitar-centric, but there you have it. I’ll probably layer on more guitars – especially at the end – once I’m ready to record it for real. Here’s the new version:

Thank you for writing a commonsense lyric. I am also a centrist, but in this election I’m so sick of the militant right that I’m leaning a bit more to the left. As a white male, I’m especially tired of the vitriole directed at our first black president. Regardless of who wins in November, we’ve got to come together or we’re going to fall apart.
Courageous song!
Thanks! I wrote it because I have that same sick and tired attitude about both left and right – especially my fellow Republicans. They have their constituent base so brainwashed right now, it’s difficult to have a cogent conversation with them. By “them” I’m meaning actual friends with whom I have been absolutely shocked from the baseless crap that issues from their mouths.
For instance, a few days ago, a person with whom I have become close – we never shared politics – struck up a conversation about the upcoming election. I said I really wasn’t sure what direction I was going to go. She then grabbed my arm and said, “Please tell me you’re a conservative…” I smiled and replied, “If I said otherwise, would that make me less of a patriot?” I then went onto say that the problem with our political system right now is that both sides are making implications that because others may not share their particular beliefs they are somehow less patriotic. As a Republican, we have morons like Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin to thank for that… hmmm… funny how they are (or were in Beck’s case) employed by Fox News. What does that tell you about responsible journalism.
For me, I’ll stick to FactCheck.org, Bill Moyers and PolitiFact…
Thanks for your honesty, Dawg. I come from a staunch Republican family, but I’ve had it with the dumbing down the party has been engaging in for the last two or three decades. Above and beyond the Glenn Becks and Sarah Palins of the world, the GOP has sold its soul to the Devil in the person of Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly. They are bullies and Nazis masquerading as gentlemen. I am currently a registered Libertarian, but if the GOP continues on with its alignment with the most racist and hate-provoking fringes of American society, I will become a Democrat. I don’t agree with everything the left does either, not by a long shot. But the right, unless it is checked, will lead us to a totalitarian state. I’ve had enough!
Yup… should’ve mentioned those guys as well… My dad loves to listen to Rush. It’s amazing just how many people have been brainwashed by people like that.
