I don’t normally forward stuff that I read in other sources, but I thought I’d forward this particular article I read on Gibson’s site. The article covers 10 Les Paul Players of the 60’s and their histories with the venerable Les Paul. Here they are:
- Eric Clapton
- Freddie King
- Jeff Beck
- Jimmy Page
- Hubert Sumlin
- Keith Richards
- Paul Kossoff
- Peter Green
- Michael Bloom
- George Harrison
I’m not one of those super-fans that know every niggling detail about a particular player, so the real surprise for me was George Harrison. I always thought he played an archtop in the 60’s. I had no idea he played a Les Paul. Oh well… the things you find out. 🙂
What’s also amusing is that Jimmy Page, one of the more Les Paul-associated players, used a Tele on some of the more famous Zeppelin tracks.
Hubert Sumlin is the real McCoy! The man could get tone out of a concrete slab. He should be ten times more famous than he is! I didn’t know Freddie King played a Les Paul. Maybe before he got his hands on an ES 345. Am I right in thinking George Harrison gave Eric Clapton his first Lest Paul? Seems like I read that somewhere.
George had a blue Stratocaster that he played through most of the mid-to-late 60s, making one of its memorable early appearances as the lead guitar on “Nowhere Man”.
Don’t know if it was George’s first, but Clapton gave George “Lucy”, the red Les Paul that Clapton played on in “While my guitar gently weeps”!
