Sorry, but sometimes I just have to vent. I know lots of dudes who call themselves guitar players who are just wankers in disguise. They’re wankers because they have some kickass and expensive gear, which they don’t hesitate to let you know how much they spent, but they couldn’t play it if their life depended on it! Sorry, but it kind of grates on my nerves because when I run across a wanker, I find myself thinking, “Damn! If I had that guitar, I could make that bad-boy SING!” Maybe I’m crossing the line here of being the supportive web site host, into a petulant and honory SOB, but even though I realize that I’m not the greatest guitar player in the world, at least I can play my friggin’ axes and make some decent sounding music!
To me, a great guitar or amp will just help inspire me to explore tonal landscapes I haven’t been to before; and help me express my music to an even greater degree. And a great piece of gear is like having an expensive screwdriver from Mac or Snap-on Tools. Functionally, it’s no different from the cheap one you can buy for a buck ninety-nine at the corner drugstore’s hardware department. But that good screwdriver makes work so much easier because so much care and consideration were put into making that tool work so much better for the job, with high-grade materials, and ergonomic design. But wankers really don’t know the difference. They just think that expensive must be better. But so many great players have proven you don’t need the expensive gear to create a good tone (think Eddie Van Halen, Willie Nelson, etc). With a wanker, it doesn’t matter what they play: They still sound bad!
I know, I’m being really harsh and probably incredibly arrogant, but I get sick and tired of wankers who insist on playing the “my dick is bigger than yours” game with their bankrolls. Show me you can play that thing, and maybe I’ll show you some respect. In the meantime, keep your mouth shut, and learn how to use your gear!

Dont forget the people who show up at a small club with damn near a semi full of gear that covers half the dance floor –> I still see that big penis show all the time. And while your on the subject, I’ve seen a recent trend of many players (and some with pretty good chops, too) playing through modeling amps live. Leave those things in the bedrooms or the studios…please. They sound hideous live in a rock environment, anyway. A guitar shouldnt be played through a computer…period.
Yeah, with respect to playing through a computer, I totally agree. I can see how some artists will do endorsement deals and demo the products at NAMM or other shows, but in a concert? You really can tell it’s artificial.
i agree! i feel your angst! these guys at my church are like that. pedal whores i call them. i call them bastards and wankers as well. but how annoying is it! i play a 30watt piece of crap (i am a student and don’t have much $$$) while they play there fender custom what ever the heck they are! and i could break them into tiny pieces with my skills. thank you for your insight…you helped me vent my anger as well.

You’ve totally missed the point of the article… so let me explain it again to your shallow, ignorant, little mind: Wankers believe that the more money they spend on gear, the better they’ll sound. What they should be working on is their playing. I know of several true players who have what you call “shit” gear, but they can play their asses off. For instance, I just saw a dude do a demo of his pedal and he played through a Squire Strat and a Sears Silvertone! And the MF could play like there was no tomorrow! So before you go on a rant like this, get your facts straight.

And BTW, I happen to _also_ play at a church in addition to playing in a lot of other places. I, for one, am not experiencing a shortage of gigs, and neither do many of the people who comment on this site on a regular basis; nor could you say that any of us has shit gear. I buy the gear I buy because it sounds good to me, irrespective of the price. If it means I spend thousands less, hey! more money for me to buy other gear.

oh mate! just come back from a gig and i am fucked right off with the guy I played with……..wanker, wanker, wanker….and I had to split the money with him.fucking finger picking aresole with a two grand heap of shit that was a tree last week with an action so high and strings so fat that swallows were roosting on them.I came across this site because i was so pissed off that I typed in Guitar wankers.
