…to drop your shiny guitar and you buy strap locks.
As soon as I decided to keep Katie May, my first thought was to get strap locks. I learned my lesson about that years ago when I dropped “Pearl,” my 60th Anniversary Strat, and put a big scratch on the front of her from her falling on a guitar stand. Sucked big time. Now, I either buy a guitar with strap locks on it already, or I go out and get a set.
My personal preference is Schaller strap locks. I’ve tried Dunlop strap locks, and did not like them one bit. Maybe it was how they were installed (not by me), but they kept on coming loose. They were quickly replaced with Schallers.
Whether you’re an active musician or a bedroom player, do yourself a favor and get some strap locks. Peace of mind is a good thing…
Do they “wear out?” Because I’ve had that happen, everything going along great, and then suddenly they start dropping my bass (which is an old-school Warwick and weighs almost 12 lbs) on me. I’ve always used Dunlops, though. Might have to try the Schallers.
Actually yes. I found that Dunlop screws bend a bit because they get torqued a lot easier than Schallers. This happened with a very heavy guitar that I had made for me (I no longer play it). One I switched to Schallers, it was a never a problem, even with my Les Pauls.
I figured that was what was going on, since I go through several sets a year with this guitar. It is really heavy (but worth it, for the tone). I’ve ordered a set of the Schaller’s, but I’m wondering if I’m going to have to change the…grommet? Whatever you call the part that attaches to the guitar. I really hate to be screwing things in and out of the wood. I’ll figure it out, though, and either way, thank you for the info.
What I did was insert a toothpick that I dipped in wood glue in the old hole, then screwed in the Schaller screw. Worked like a charm!
Oh, nice. Thanks!
BTW, liked your song “You and Tequila.” Man, my best friend needs to hear that song! 🙂
Lol. Thank you! That demo is SO old and not very good…we sound better live. Plan was to have a CD or EP out by the end of last year, but our lead vocalist got deployed unexpectedly. 😦
Amen to the need for strap locks! Also, who’s Katie May? I must have missed an earlier post.
