Since Michael passed away in 1997, the only video examples that I’ve been able to find have been single songs. But this afternoon as I was reminiscing about his music and the time in my life when I spent at least three nights a week at the Varsity Theatre in Palo Alto, CA to watch Michael play, I came across this video, which is the last full-length concert video recorded two weeks prior to his death. I encourage you to watch this video in its entirety as like me, you’ll be mesmerized by his technique. And though the sound quality isn’t the best, you’ll be amazed by the tones he can produce from his acoustic guitar. Even after all these years, I can’t help but be in awe of the man.
Thanks for posting this Goofy. I’m a huge fan of Michael Hedges. You are dead right, all there seems to have been are short youtube clips. I’m going to enjoy this one! Take care
It’s good to see this video. Was it really so close to his death? Oddly enough, I just wrote about Michael in my own blog this week . . . I did a bunch of concerts with him back in the mid-1980s, was with him when he recorded Aerial Boundaries; he even had me stand in for him in his regular gig at the New Varsity when I was out there (helped me pay airfare). You might be interested in the photo of the two of us I posted on my blog . . . . danielhechtblog.com. His technique was marvelous of course, but it’s the aura or ray he sent out, at every concert, that was really unique.

Daniel, I remember you quite well! I was the Filipino guy that sat in the front row two or three times a week at the New Varsity. We never met, but yes, I remember you! And like you, it wasn’t just Michael’s extraordinary technique that had me mesmerized, but his angelic energy that captivated me every time I went to see him play. Without a doubt, Michael’s energy has had a tremendous influence on how I approach performing to this day. Thanks for your insight, and your blog post was excellent!
